Trust me, I’m right there with you at times! Click through to read my tips on how to stay JOYFUL when it comes to keeping your family organized!

I love making a good list or a plan! You know what I mean? It just feels nice to sit down with a pen and paper, and brain dump everything into nice, neat, orderly little columns. HOWEVER, it’s not the same when it comes to keeping my family organized.

Why not?

Keeping my household and my family organized is tough work, because things change and fluctuate constantly.

I bet you know what I mean, don’t ya? For me, keeping the family organized consists of things like remembering all the appointments, getting all the shopping done, ensuring that everyone is staying healthy and happy, and remembering all those little details that seem to hold it all together. When you think of those things individually, it’s fine! But add those things to work, sleep, meal times, date nights, church, family events, and the quiet time needed to stay sane…I quickly find myself struggling to keep it together and remain the calm, refreshing wife that I’m called to be.

And that’s what brings us to the final week in our series on how to find joy in the routine tasks! And this week, we’re chatting about staying organized and on top of things! It’s a pretty broad topic, but I think you’ll find that you identify with a ton of it, so let’s do this! Below, we are going to chat about 3 reasons why it’s totes awesome to be in charge of keeping things organized and also some ways to get more excited about it!

1 Corinthians 15:58 says, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”

“So, why is this something that I should even strive for…?”

we serve a god of order

I’m going to be honest, I haven’t made it through the entire bible yet…but I’m working on it! With that being said, I’m sure there are so many examples of God’s orderly character, but the one that sticks out to me is the most from what I have read is the ENTIRE book of numbers. If you’re struggling with finding encouragement for planning and keeping on top of the organization for your family, I promise you that you will find exactly that in this book of the bible!

Check it out.

Numbers 1:2 “Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head.”

The book of numbers is named for the numbering of all the people. In this book, Moses took a census of the Israelites…twice! Do you get overwhelmed when you start to think of preparing the weekly grocery shopping list, updating the chore chart, budgeting the finances, and figuring out how to fit in everyone’s activities in the week? Trust me, I’m right there with you at times! But in the book of numbers, we see that God instructed Moses to take a census not once but twice. The first was to organize those that could fight into units to defend themselves and the second was to prepare to enter the promised land after 40 years of wandering in the desert. Each time, they were instructed to get organized in order to be more effective for God’s purpose.

Another theme that we see in Numbers is God’s detailed and thorough instruction. The Lord detailed the arrangement of the camps, the roles of the people, exactly how to remain pure in the camp, how to perform blessings, etc. All of these instructions, planning, and organization were there to ensure that the Israelites knew exactly how to live and thrive. God cares so much that he tells us exactly what to do throughout the entire bible, and he does so with order and planning! We can mirror that in our quest to keep our family and home as organized and orderly as possible!

If you’re still not sure about this Numbers thing, check out the bible study that I followed while reading that book of the bible! I encourage you to dig in, and see for yourself what God has to say about order! Check it out here. 🙂

You have a powerful role!

Have you ever stopped to think about how much you influence your home and the attitudes of those that live in it? As women, it’s a huge blessing that we are able to be such powerful members in our families simply by doing the “background tasks”. It’s obvious that hubby is doing work by going out into the world and making money. It’s obvious how hard he works when he spends hours out in the yard mowing. But sometimes it can seem like the things we do inside the home get lost. It can seem thankless at times.

Because of this, I have been making a bigger effort to stop worrying so much about the thanks I get from my husband. Instead I’m spending more time feeling good about the things I’m doing for my family…without them even realizing it sometimes!

Just think about this for a second…

What would happen if you stopped keeping track of the appointments that everyone has throughout the week? What would happen if you didn’t make the meal plan and the list for the grocery store? What would happen if you weren’t there to remember that you need dish detergent and a new mop the next time that you go to the store? Your family would have a really hard time without you, that’s what would happen! Men and women were wired differently by God, and as women, we just seem to have a knack for keeping it all together. 😉 Embrace that role in your home, and set about keeping order JOYFULLY!

Keeping order makes it easier to overcome obstacles

When we are aware of the obstacles ahead, it makes it much easier to face them. Makes sense right?? No one likes a bad surprise! As the organizers and planers of some of the things in our home, we are able to prepare the family for what they may face in their day! If you know that your husband has a long work day followed by a meeting followed by a doctor’s appointment, you can set him up with some extra snacks, some coffee, and a super sweet love note to give him that boost to get through it! If you are diligent about keeping the pantry neat and stocked up with food, you are better able to handle the storm that might leave your house without power for a few days!

And those are just a few examples, girlfriend!

The bottom line is, you have a great role in your home. You have been designed with this in mind, and you have the stuff inside you needed to keep things running smoothly in your home. I know that at times it can seem like you have too much on your plate and you can’t keep it all straight. Go to the Lord, and ask him to help you keep organized, because he is God of order!

Carisa, I have written a couple of comments for the last 10 days on your website. Thank you for the encouragement that I read in your articles. I am the wife with a hard time with controlling husband. It’s a pity that he no longer trusts in me with organising and has started setting micromanagement rules for many aspects of our family life. I do not know what to do, what would you advise? I am not sure if the problem is in me with poor organising or with him with controlling issues in his character but it’s a hard time. It’s like I have !ost great part of the wife’s important role, and now I am in a position of a house
worker who has to be told what to do. How to restore things? If you have read my comments you could contact me on my e-mail too, but please do not publish it online.

I have been thinking about this off and on through our the years to stop asking or waiting for praise from my husband but look at it as what I’m doing my children. Taking care of them and him.

This is a great post Carisa … you have a great attitude towards doing things for your family, not for thanks, but simply out of love for them. I love organising! but I do admit there’s always so much to fit in each week that it gets overwhelming at times – such a great reminder that we can’t do it alone and we actually need to ask God for help! He delights to help us as we serve Him! 🙂
